BY-SV Challenge match.

PointeWest WDM, 06-20-05. BY knew it wasn't going to go well when SV opened with back to back service aces. Although BY had predicted he would take 3 games from SV - tennis elbow, and eight double faults prevented him from achieving his goal. SV wins the match 6-1, 6-0.

TJ hits the courts!

PointeWest WDM, 06-14-05. Aided by SV's daughter, TJ practices her strokes, and in just one session improves to the point where she would likely defeat most ladder participants. TJ demonstrates that with a little practice, the game can become even more rewarding, then the fitness benefits alone.

06-12-05 PointeWest. The coveted number-one singles position changed hands today, as JT convincingly defeated JJ in straight sets (6-0, 6-1).

DR-JR Challenge match.

06-08-05 Indianola. For medical reasons, DR decides to forfeit to JR. Additionally, DR did not want to block any ladder participants while he recovers - asking to be placed at the bottom of the ladder. This placement will only impact the singles ladder. No changes will be made to the doubles ladder. DR looks forward to climbing the ladder with a vengeance as soon as conditions permit.

06-01-05 Mercy Medical Center. Interaction between DR's meds with an allergy medication, shot DR's blood pressure to dangerous levels. The docs at Mercy now have things under control, and DR is looking forward to dominating JR/JT when he gets discharged.

DR/SV - JR/JT Challenge match.

PointeWest WDSM, 05-23-05. In the first doubles match of the season, DR/SV successfully defend their ladder position from a challenge by JR/JT. Down early in the first, DR/SV overcome a 4-1 deficit to win the first set 6-4. JT took issue with SV's overhead slam - which was unfortunately aimed at JT's head... With a one set advantage, DR/SV had an easier time in the second winning 6-3. TJ and DH attended the match each taking photos. More photos by DH.

BY - JJ Challenge match.

Lions Park Urbandale, 05-23-05. JJ successfully defends the top position again against BY's onslaught. In a very even match lasting three hours, JJ and BY split sets initially. Down 4-2 in the third, JJ battles back to take the third 7-5. The score says it all (6-4, 4-6, 7-5)! These two opponents are very evenly matched, but JJ seems to have a slight edge - winning his last three encounters with BY. File Photo

Control Tower 05-21-05. Rumors were floating around the facility today, that DNR was planning to challenge LD for a challenge match. LD hearing this unsettling news, quickly made an official challenge to KN. When asked why he had circumvented DNR's challenge, LD replied"DNR kicked the crap out of me last year, I am not ready for that kind of whoopin yet. I'm trying to climb the ladder with as little resistance as possible. I call it strategy." LD was reminded that this kind of strategy can only last so long. Eventually he will have to face up and play the top dogs!

KL/KI Challenge match.

Harmon Park 05-10-05. Playing each other for the first time since the 2004 TowerTennis Tournament Semi-finals. SV & DNR face off in conditions quite different then the cold of last fall; and with different weather came a different result.

NU/KL Challenge match.

Harmon Park 05-10-05. Controversy erupted early when KL called his own serve out, after NU played the point. The code of tennis was recited, and the players moved on. Down 25lbs. NU moved about the court with ease, while KL's shots sought every angle to win. Although I could only witness half of the first set - many points required long hard fought rallies to complete. A tie-breaker was required to complete the second set, but NU shuts KL out during the tie-break game. NU captures KL's ladder position 6-4, 7-6 (7-0).

JJ/BY Challenge match.

Lions Park, Urbandale; 05-09-05. BY double faults sixteen times, and commits numerous unforced errors to lose his second straight match to JJ: 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. JJ became uncomfortable losing the second set to an old fat man; so he retrieved his spectacles from his vehicle, before playing the third set.

JT/BX Challenge match.

Harmon Park 05-04-05. BX comes out of tennis retirement, picking up a racket for the first time in 30 years... only to suffer defeat at the hands of JT, who won the match with a highlight, service ace! BX shed some rust and managed to have a couple good rallies with the champ and they both had fun. JT salutes BX for not letting the mismatch intimidate him. PointeWest Apartments 05-03-05. New courts provided a new environment for play today. LD came into the match bursting with confidence. But, soon that confidence was diminished by SV's constant drive to win. LD found his top spin forehand stroke late in the second set, but it was too late. SV's serve had trouble throughout the match, but that was a non-issue due to LD's constant unforced error's. SV captures LD's ladder position in straight sets (6-3, 7-5). Photo by JT.

Lions Park 05-02-05. JJ & BY battle unseasonable cold, as they fight for the top of the ladder. In a three setter; with extremes on both sides, BY falls to JJ (7-5, 0-6, 6-2). JJ captures the top of the ladder, and now waits for challenges to come to him.

JT/DR Challenge match.

Harmon Park 04-12-05. JT defeats DR in straight sets (6-3, 6-0). It was a classic JT/DR match-up. The rallies were long, and hard fought. DR once again demonstrated relentlessness, but JT was too much. JT takes DR's ladder position, and advances within striking range of DK. PJ and JJ are ineligible for challenge until their existing challenges are resolved. More Photos

LD/NU Challenge match.

Harmon Park 04-12-05. NU got a good workout on the courts today, but couldn't defend his ladder position. NU falls to LD in straight sets. This defeat allows LD to advance to the 13th ladder position. LD is on the move, and is hungry for further advancement. SV, and JR are currently eligible for LD to challenge. KL is not eligible until he completes his match with PJ.

BR/LD's first match!

Harmon Park 04-05-05. As a result of an unfortunate draw position, BR finds himself on the bottom of the 2005 TowerTennis Ladder. Seeking to move up quickly, BR challenged the Lord (LD). The Lord wishing to defend his position accepted, and the battle commenced. As a spectator, I can say that this was one of the most competitive, and enjoyable matches I seen among TowerTennis personnel. Both players exhibit great strokes, and are as consistent as DR. Each point was hard fought over, with rallies lasting 8 or more shots. BR's serve and net game was phenomenal. While LD's Overhead lobs stung BR like a bee.

The match lasted well over two hours, and with such long rallies I was personally impressed at their stamina. LD took the first set 6-3, BR tied it up by taking the second 6-2. The third was looking like a real thriller for a while, but fatigue appeared to hinder BR's consistency. BR makes several unforced errors at the end, and LD punishes him taking the Final set 6-3. LD successfully defends his Ladder position, but BR demonstrated the he will be a force to contend with.

Upset of the Year!

Harmon Park 04-05-05. SV dispatches TowerTennis Champion JT in three sets. JT's first challenge of the year proved one to remember. Never before has JT ever lost a singles match. Now he has, and SV gets bragging rights for eternity. Winter rust was quite evident during the first set. JT couldn't get a first serve in for a prayer. SV took advantage, and easily took the first set 6-2. Mortified by these events, JT's serve started to hit, putting SV on the defense during the second set. JT wins the second set 6-3. Tied one set all SV goes up 3-0 in the third, and all of the sudden an upset was a real possibility. SV's first serve starts to strike, and JT finds himself down 5-0 in the third. JT rallied to win the the next three games, but couldn't dig himself out of the hole he found himself in. With TJ and DR providing moral support, SV wins one more game, and with it the set and the match. All present (Except JT) were overjoyed as the reality of witnessing history set in. DR remarked that he never would have believed it, had he not seen it with his own eyes. SV was especially pleased! Photos taken by TJ
